What is Pupil Premium?
In 2011 – 12 the Government launched its Pupil Premium funding. This money is sent to school based on the numbers of pupils in the school who are eligible for Free School Meals (FSM). In 2012 – 13, it was expanded to include all children who have been eligible for FSM within the last 6 years.
Nationally, the statistics show that students who are in receipt of FSM do less well than their peers. The aim of this money is to try and close that attainment gap.
Local authorities are responsible for looked after children in care and will make payments to schools and academies where an eligible looked after child is on roll continuously for more than six months. The Virtual Head teacher decides on the allocation funding schools receive for current Looked After Children.
A premium of £335 is also available for children whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces. This service premium is designed to address the emotional and social well-being of these pupils.
